Jun. 15--Carolinas HealthCare System chief executive Harry Nurkin got a 10.2 percent pay hike in 1995 as his group's earnings soared by one-third, according to the system's just-released annual report.

His counterpart at the Presbyterian Healthcare System, Paul Betzold, received a 1.4 percent raise, though he received additional, deferred compensation not included in his 1995 compensation package.

Nurkin was paid $695,000 in 1995, while Betzold got $263,000.

Nurkin's organization, a self-supporting public agency chartered by the state, is far larger than Betzold's not-for-profit corporation. Both groups operate hospitals, medical offices and other …
