Jun. 4--Tell a friend you'd like to be president someday, and it just might come true.

That's the way it worked for Surfside Beach legal secretary Elaine Sumerel, who is about to finish her yearlong term as president of the National Association of Legal Secretaries.

Sumerel, secretary and administrator at Welch Law Firm for the past eight and a half 8 1/2 years, said her stint as president has been demanding but rewarding.

She estimates she has averaged 20 to 30 hours a week working on NALS responsibilities, in addition to her full-time job.

"I couldn't have done it without the support of (attorney Dean Welch) and my family," Sumerel said. …
