Bell Atlantic Nynex Mobile Starts Work on Charlotte Digital Switching Center.(Originated from The Herald, Rock Hill, S.C.)

CHARLOTTE, N.C.--May 31--Digital phone technology is about to hit the airwaves in the region.

Bell Atlantic Nynex Mobile broke ground this week on what will be a $5 million, 31,000-square-foot digital switching center in University Research Park in Charlotte.

"It's the nerve center of a telephone communications system," said Bill Ballenger of Carolina Public Relations, who is handling publicity for the Bell Atlantic Nynex facility.

Ballenger said the new site, which will open in early 1997, will employ 45 people initially and possibly up to 100 when it is up and running.
