WASHINGTON _ Sen. Bob Dole's once-creaky campaign turned into a juggernaut Tuesday, rolling over opposition in multistate elections and forcing rivals to search desperately for a last stand to deny him the Republican presidential nomination.
Dole appeared likely to win all or most of the eight state primaries Tuesday.
Former television commentator Pat Buchanan, who hoped to turn Dole back in Georgia, was trailing there and in several other states, according to exit polls of voters. Publisher Steve Forbes, who hoped to win in Colorado and Connecticut, was trailing Dole in those states as well.
Voters appeared to respond to Dole's strong free-trade campaign against Buchanan's protectionist message and his ability to siphon off Christian conservative votes from Buchanan.
``It's just a matter of time,'' Dole said, anticipating good results Tuesday and in New York's primary on Thursday.
