SACRAMENTO, Calif. _ After a sometimes sputtering campaign to gut affirmative action programs, supporters of the California Civil Rights Initiative say they have finally gathered enough signatures to put the measure on the November ballot.
Gov. Pete Wilson and University of California Regent Ward Connerly, along with a bi-partisan group of lawmakers and volunteers, presented the last of 1.1 million voter signatures to Sacramento County officials during a news conference Wednesday morning.
Backers of the proposed initiative had until 5 p.m. Wednesday to submit about 700,000 signatures, but they wanted more than a million in case some of the signatures are invalid. The Secretary of State's Office said it could be a month before the signatures are verified. ...
