Sep. 6--Tapp's closing puts two of Columbia's struggling shopping centers -- Dutch Square and Woodhill Mall -- in an even more precarious position.

Dutch Square Mall will lose one of its two department store anchors when Tapp's closes later this year. The 92-year-old retailer, which hasn't made a profit in at least three years, announced Monday it is quitting while ahead to avoid bankruptcy. All four of its Columbia stores will close.

Dutch Square could lose its remaining anchor if J.B. White decides to close its store there in favor of a new one being built at the bigger, more viable Columbiana Centre.
