Ballard Power Systems, Inc. (9000 Glenlyon Pkwy., Burnaby, BC V5J 5J9, Canada; Tel: 604/412-4740, Fax: 604/412-3131) has developed a way of treating electrocatalyst particles to improve PEM performance and lower costs. Ballard impregnates micropores with an aperture size of less than 0.1 micron with an ion-conducting material.

The impregnant, granted U.S. Patent 6,074,773, has an oxygen permeability greater than that of water. The impregnant improves the mass transport properties for hydrogen, oxygen, and reaction products within the micropores. That, in turn, improves electrocatalyst use and fuel-cell performance with less catalytic material.
