Actor Christopher Reeve likely will never recover from his paralyzing neck injury, but his accident may spur much-needed research in a field that still is years from a major breakthrough, a University of Minnesota spinal cord expert says.

``You'll see a lot more people involved,'' said Dr. Kirkham Wood, assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of Minnesota. ``This could be the impetus for additional fund-raising.''

More research money would be welcome news for Charles Carson, president of the Spinal Cord Society, an international fund-raising group based in Fergus Falls, Minn.
