May 24--Work has begun on the initial phase of a 12,000-square-foot shopping center at India Hook and Ebinport roads that is scheduled to be completed in August.

Veterinarians Bert Platt and Roger Troutman, who operate Catawba Animal Clinic across India Hook from the site, are developing the 1 1/3-acre site and shopping center at a cost of about $900,000.

The first phase of the shopping center will house six shops in a 7,400- square-foot structure. The developers have a verbal agreement for a 60 Minute Cleaners location in the shopping center, said Mark Mayfield of Southern Realty, who is handling marketing and leasing.
