Many of America's 14 million diabetics will soon be able to alter their daily regimes of insulin injections, special diets and boring exercise programs.

The first new diabetes drug in the United States in more than 20 years has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It appears safe and effectively controls Type II diabetes _ the most common type.

Generically called metformin and sold under the brand name Glucophage, the drug helps people with adult-onset or Type II diabetes lower their blood-sugar levels without the many harmful side effects of other medicines.

Some doctors suggest that Glucophage may help patients avoid weight gain…
