CHARLOTTE, N.C. _ To understand why this is a tense time for some parents, consider this tale of two kindergartners.
This time last year, with kindergarten registration approaching, the parents of Bobby Hutter and Morgan Rowe were wondering whether to enroll their kids. Both would turn 5 in time, but would be among the youngest in their class.
Both families heard from people who said it's better to wait a year. Both decided to send their kids anyway.
Today Morgan, whose preschool teachers weren't sure she was ready, is thriving at David Cox Road Elementary.
``She's doing well and she's happy and well adjusted,'' says her mother, Barbara Rowe. ``Now that I see her, I can't picture her (still) being in preschool.''
But Bobby, whose preschool teachers indicated he had the skills to start school, is struggling at Bruns Avenue Elementary. His mom, Lorraine Hutter, wishes she'd held him back instead of sending him off with his preschool classmates.
``I was so in awe of this wonderful preschool he went to,'' she says. ``You have to decide for yourself.''
That's exactly right, the experts say. Parents of children with summer and fall birthdays have a tough decision to make about when their kids should start school.
