CHARLOTTE, N.C. _ NASCAR driver Chuck Bown, sidelined since last June when an injury in a crash caused impaired vision, put himself through a high-speed test Wednesday and found dramatic improvement.

``I'm pretty darn close to being back where I need to be to start racing again,'' said Bown, who drove one of the Active Motorsports team's Chevrolets at Richmond Raceway. ``I'm very pleasantly surprised.''

Bown, 40, the 1990 Grand National champion, suffered a head injury when he hit the Turn 1 wall at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway during the UAW-GM Teamwork 500. The impact stretched a muscle between his brain stem and the right eye.
