KATYR-YURT, Russia _ While all of Katyr-Yurt slept under a blanket of fresh snow Tuesday morning, the war for Chechnya came to the village.
A Russian warplane attacked just before first light. It dropped bombs that took out half the bridge over the Shalash River, smashed the new village mosque, and destroyed the kitchen of Dasha Sadulleheva, known to all as ``Hero Mother.''
Sadulleheva, a sturdy woman of 53, emerged with only a gash across her nose from flying glass. But villagers said 12 children from six other damaged homes were wounded, and everyone wondered how such a thing could happen in their quiet little village.
The bombing run shattered more than the morning calm in Katyr-Yurt. It also destroyed villagers' hopes of staying out of the war.
Until Tuesday, Katyr-Yurt had suffered no damage during six weeks of fighting. Though it is a Chechen village just 25 miles from Grozny, the village elders had decided not to send their young men to join ...
