Apr. 12--Each pack of cigarettes sold in the United States costs an average of $7.18 in health-related losses, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday.
CDC officials say the economic toll from smoking -- $157 billion a year -- is growing, despite a decline in the number of people smoking. Smoking accounts for about 8 percent of all personal health-related spending.
"The health costs . . . are the result of smoking behavior that took place several decades ago," said Terry Pechacek, associate director of the CDC's Office of Smoking and Health.
