ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. _ By almost any measure, New Mexico should be a safe state for Democrats in this year's presidential election. Its voter registration is overwhelmingly Democratic, and the majority of its population consists of ethnic minorities, who tend to vote for Democrats.
But, just as in 2000, when Al Gore and George W. Bush raced to a photo finish in the state, with Gore winning by only 366 votes, New Mexico is fertile territory for Republicans.
A recent poll for The Santa Fe New Mexican newspaper and KOB television found President Bush narrowly leading Sen. John Kerry, 47 percent to 43 percent. The margin of error for the poll by Mason-Dixon was plus or minus 4 percentage points.
