In Lausanne, Switzerland, a little-known tribunal called the Court of Arbitration for Sport is weighing a case that should never have been brought before it. In this misbegotten matter, Olympic all-around gymnastics champion Paul Hamm, of Waukesha, Wis., is being asked to explain why he should be allowed to keep a gold medal that he won fair and square last month.
Having won it once, in Athens, the court is demanding, in effect, that he win it all over again, this time in a courtroom. How many athletes are required to do this?
