"SICILIA BELLA" Songs by Scarlatti, d'Astorga, Bellini, Donaudy, d'Asdia, Cali, Vancheri. Orchestra del Teatro Bellini, Mercurio. Texts and translations. VAI VAIA 1229

Marcello Giordani is such an appealing singer, with his authentic Italian sound and his seemingly effortless production, that it's a pity his voice sounds a bit husky (and almost without low notes) in this recital, recorded live in Catania in December 2002, of songs by Sicilian composers. The first half--Baroque arias by Alessandro Scarlatri (the ubiquitous "Gia il sole dal gange") and Emanuele d'Astorga, and canzone by Bellini and Donaudy--finds Giordani relaxed and comfortable with the repertoire, but the pieces really owe their success to the lively conducting of Steven Mercurio, who also provided superb and effective orchestrations. Mercurio is attentive to the inner life of phrases, letting them expand and contract, and he goes for the often-overlooked rhythmic detail; as a result, some of these accompaniments could almost stand alone as orchestral numbers.
