Christus am Olberge, a.k.a. Christ on the Mount of Olives, is something of a curio: Beethoven's only oratorio. Written in 1803, just before the Eroica symphony and Fidelio, its finest moments foreshadow those great works. Unfortunately, the lesser passages fall back on almost predictable formulas. The totality vacillates between inspired adventure and relatively stilted maneuver. Ultimately, Beethoven settles for primitive narrative in place of complex development.

The text, created by Franz Xavier Huber, focuses on the moral and spiritual dilemma of Christ--an emphatically human Christ--in the garden of Gethsemane.
