WESTERN CONFERENCE
Earthquakes
Coach: Dominic Kinnear (first year).
2003 finish: 14-7-9, first in West, MLS Cup champions.
Outlook: Can the Quakes win without Frank Yallop, who coached them to two titles in three years? Taking over for Yallop, who left to coach the Canadian national team, is his assistant for the past three seasons, Dominic Kinnear. Kinnear made an effort to retain as many players from last year's title run and says he will continue to run the team as before. FW Landon Donovan (12 goals, six assists) is the league's best player when on his game and should be the favorite to win the MVP award. FW Dwayne DeRosario could have a big year if healthy. Ronnie Ekelund, Richard Mulrooney (seven assists) and Brian Mullan (nine assists) combine grit and skill in the midfield. Pat Onstad was last year's league goalkeeper of the year. Age of the back line _ led by 35-year-old Jeff Agoos and 33-year-old Troy Dayak _ is a concern. Other teams look better on paper, but there's no assurance they'll play as well together.
