At last, some common sense can be heard in the welfare reform debate.
On Tuesday, the U.S. Senate approved an additional $6 billion for child care in its extension of the historic 1996 welfare law. Majority Leader Bill Frist and other moderate Republicans joined Democrats who recognize that without child care, single parents can't work _ it's that simple.
The 1996 law, aimed at moving low-income single parents into the workforce, has been spectacularly successful. The number of families on welfare has dropped by more than half.
