Robert Emmet (1778-1803) was the leader of an unsuccessful rebellion against British rule who perished on the scaffold. (Like so many Irish nationalists he was a Protestant and Anglo-Irish.) He was, in the author's words the perfect hero for Irish nationalists: 'the most iconic of Ireland's many national icons, his youthfulness, good breeding, tragic romance, untimely and dramatic end and memorable trial speech forming a narrative of noble victim against the foul oppressor'.
