This Barbiere dates from the tail end of an era when projected titles were not yet universal, and when it was still possible to see a traditional production in Germany. It neither plays down to the audience with excessive shtick nor invents a scenario irrelevant to that of the original work. The edition of the score used by conductor Gabriele Ferro includes recitatives often cut.

Naturally, interest centers around the youthful performance of Bartoli--before she became CECILIA BARTOLI--and the news is good. She is spontaneous, fresh of voice--albeit with her wonted idiosyncratic production--almost free of the grimaces that became part of her later work, and as always, a lively and committed performer every moment she is onstage.
