SAN JOSE, Calif. _ The California Supreme Court on Monday ordered the Roman Catholic Church's affiliated charities to cover the cost of birth control pills for women workers, upholding a five-year-old law in a ruling that could reverberate in states with similar legal protections.
In a 6-1 decision, the state's high court said a 1999 law that requires employers to pay for contraceptives applies to Catholic Charities, a statewide network of nonprofit programs that provide millions of dollars in social services each year, from health care to education. The ruling was a legal and philosophical blow to church leaders who've argued for years that the birth control provision conflicts with the church's moral code.
