Can Owens escape his gridiron purgatory?(Knight Ridder Newspapers)

This is not what Terrell Owens had in mind. This off-season was supposed to be about being free, about escaping his gridiron purgatory, known as the San Francisco 49ers organization. In the world of the National Football League, where contracts mean little _ and even less if you're playing for vindictive souls adept at manipulation _ your freedom to negotiate a new contract is the lone device of strength you have.
Yet here is Mr. Owens. The man with the Sharpie inside his sock allegedly neglected to stay on top of his agent, potentially costing the enigmatic all-pro wide receiver anywhere from $15 million to $20 million.
