The cover story of the February 1984 issue of Geographical explored the small, multicultural South American country of Surinam, which had come to the world's attention when it underwent a military coup in 1980. The country was to go through more political upheavel--although democratic elections were held in 1987, another coup took place just two years later. In 1991, the military again stood down and democratically elected governments have ruled ever since. These governments have moved effectively to establish civilian control of the military.
