I recently read an article by Bruce Fathers on water safety for the elderly and infirm in the Oct. 2003 issue. In this article, Mr. Fathers suggests increasing the hot water temperature in excess of 140[degrees]F in an attempt to kill the legionnella pneumophila bacteria that are present in the domestic hot water system to safeguard the welfare of individuals who use power mixing valves. I am suggesting that Mr. Fathers is not aware, nor does he understand, the Legionnaires' Disease (LD) bug or how it multiplies and becomes a pathogen.

Installing power mixing valves or other manufacturer devices will not prevent LD from occurring unless you increase the temperature of the hot water without risk to the user from possible…
