Long one of New York City's most zealous, persuasive and energetic advocates for the arts and education, Katharine Bidwell did nor let a diagnosis of breast cancer diminish her dedication or deflect her sense of purpose; for more than fifteen years, she met the challenges of her illness with wry humor and graceful courage, providing inspiration and comfort to her friends, colleagues and family. Katharine's destination in life was always stage center, and her tempo was always full speed ahead. Talent, keen ambition and striking, large-eyed good looks landed Katharine a spot in the chorus of the St. Louis Municipal Opera while she was still in her teens, and she was eager for the life of an actor after her 1959 graduation from Sarah Lawrence College. She stopped pursuing a professional stage career upon marriage but remained ever afterward a passionate amateur performer--and a perceptive, outspoken observer of other performers.
