"Crossover" was a phenomenon established by an ailing and eventually desperate recording industry in search of higher income from new audiences. The "Three Tenors" gimmick was an irresistible crossover triumph--while it lasted. Luciano Pavarotti, with his convivial nature and appealing personality, was the central figure in this aging threesome. It was based on the pretense that he and his two colleagues were not elitist operatic artists but down-to-earth pop singers at heart.
In Ti Adoro, the jovial tenor's first new solo recording in many years, a new phase has been reached. Pavarotti has now completely "crossed over" into the world of pop, but, fortunately, there is nothing really extreme in this effort. His legion of admirers can still enjoy the unique brightness of his voice and the communicative magic he exudes. In recordings made in various locations between 2001 and 2003, the familiar, endearing tone and the exceptional clarity of textual projection are still present.
