FORT WORTH, Texas _ Steer wrestler Matt Dorenkamp hopes his Sunday performance may be the break he needed.
The Colorado cowboy downed his steer in 3.7 seconds to take the second-round lead of his event at the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show Rodeo. If that holds up, Dorenkamp is in line to cash a check of more than $5,000, even though he didn't qualify for the rodeo's finals where the big money will be distributed Feb. 8.
Dorenkamp, who comes from a long line of rodeo people, says he would like to go on the tour full time, but he usually competes as long as the money holds out. When the funds dry up, he returns home to work on the ranch his father manages in Roggon, Colo., 48 miles northeast of Denver, and becomes a weekend rodeo cowboy.
With the kind of background he has, Dorenkamp will always compete in rodeo. Even if it's just on weekends in the Mountain States Circuit, where he qualified for its finals last year. A large number of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association's 7,300 membership are in Dorenkamp's shape.
