ATHENS, Ga. _ Andy Landers' smallest player carried him to one of his biggest victories Sunday afternoon.
Freshman guard Janese Hardrick set a career high in scoring for the third straight game to help No. 19 Georgia beat Alabama 71-68 to give Landers his 600th career Division I win.
"It's a significant milestone that I'm sure he's glad to get behind him so he doesn't have to talk about it anymore," athletics director Vince Dooley said. "And that No. 14 (Hardrick) really helped him get there, too."
The 5-foot-6 Hardrick finished with 30 points, including the four most important ones in the last minute of the game. She rebounded an Alexis Kendrick miss and then scored on a driving layup with 21.2 seconds remaining for a 69-68 lead. Then she rebounded a miss by Alabama's Lauren Hill on the ensuing possession and hit two foul shots to extend the lead to 71-68.
"She's got a little swagger, which is good," Landers said. "She knows she has the ability to beat you."
A Stegeman Coliseum crowd of 4,145 gave the 51-year-old Landers a standing ovation when the victory finally was secured.
