GLENDALE, Ariz. _ The effort was palatable. The offense was better. The game was entertaining.

But for the Coyotes, none of that matters. All that matters is they can't win when it matters _ as the rest of the Western Conference playoffs contenders disappear.

Dallas' Brenden Morrow collected his first career hat trick in the first 21:08 of the game _ and could have had three more _ while the Coyotes chased and chased but could never catch the Stars, losing 5-4 before 16,879 fans at Glendale Arena _ which is beginning to look like it might be haunted.
