ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. _ Democrats will just be whistling Dixie if they waste their time and money in the South, politicians here say.
Forget the so-called Southern strategy. Hang a left on the road to the White House and head to the Southwest, strategists suggest.
Here, the Democrats are plentiful and the states are winnable.
"South Carolina _ no one will think about them after February 3, but we'll be important through November," said Paul Hegarty, executive director of the Arizona Democratic Party. "For either party to win the White House, you're going to have to win here."
Traditionally, the spotlight has shone on South Carolina at this point in the presidential primary season. But New Mexico and Arizona are among the seven states that scheduled contests for Tuesday. That move made the Southwest a player in the nominating process and spurred discussions about where Democrats should spend scarce resources, both now and through November.
