FORT WORTH, Texas _ President Bush and senior Pentagon officials may soon face a tough, politically charged decision over buying a new generation of presidential helicopters.
It could come down to an election-year choice between an old-line American company and its workers, or Bush's good friend and ally, British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
The Pentagon recently launched a competition to build a new generation of modern, high-tech helicopters that will serve as executive transports for the president _ designated Marine One when he's aboard _ and other top U.S. officials.
It's a contest that pits Connecticut-based Sikorsky Aircraft Corp.'s S-92 helicopter against a U.S.-European consortium made up of Lockheed Martin Corp., the British-Italian aerospace firm AgustaWestland and Fort Worth-based Bell Helicopter, offering the US-101.
Proposals are due Monday to the Navy and Marine officials overseeing the program. A decision is expected this spring.
