HOUSTON _ If you somehow missed Adam Vinatieri being the Super Bowl hero two years ago, this was your second chance.
For the second time in three Super Bowls, New England became champion on a late field goal by its steely kicker. He made a 41-yarder with four seconds remaining to give the Patriots a 32-29 victory over the feisty Carolina Panthers in front of 71,525 at Reliant Stadium.
Vinatieri kicked a 48-yard field goal two years ago in New Orleans as New England earned its first Super Bowl title with a 20-17 victory over St. Louis.
"That is what Adam is here for," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said. "He came through for us big time."
Vinatieri, who was the difference in the Patriots' two playoff games this season, was shaky Sunday night before his game-winner. He missed a 31-yard chip shot in the first quarter and had a 36-yard attempt blocked in the second quarter.
