HOUSTON _ The Carolina Panthers' highly touted defense got worn down and eventually worn out by New England's offense in Super Bowl XXXVIII.
Twice needing to stop the Patriots to give the team a chance to win, the Panthers' defense couldn't keep New England from scoring.
The last and most decisive stand came in the final minute after Carolina tied the score 29-29. New England drove from its 40 to the Carolina 24 and got a game-winning 41-yard field goal from Adam Vinatieri with four seconds remaining.
During the Patriots' previous possession, Carolina led 22-21 but gave up a touchdown drive and a two-point conversion.
The Patriots gained more yards (481) than the Panthers had allowed in their previous 20 games this season. New England also dominated the time of possession, keeping the ball for more than 38 minutes.
Previously, the most yardage Carolina had given up was 397, at Tampa Bay on Sept. 14.
