May 14--A Callaway County animal research center that relocated from Columbia last year has lost a contract with a national pet food company after allegations of mistreatment by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Sinclair Research Center Inc., an independent research facility near Hatton, lost its contract with Ohio-based Iams Co. late last month after a nine-month PETA investigation of the facility. The contract loss resulted in a layoff of nine employees from the center, a former manager said today.
