MIAMI _ Coloring my hair pink is something I have seriously considered. Decided not to. But seriously considered it. Can you prove I didn't? What if I produced a recently purchased bottle of flamingo-colored dye?

Now let's whittle the above apparent lunacy into a point.

Sports leagues are kidding themselves _ or more likely trying to fool us, or mollify the Rev. Jesse Jackson _ with their ``initiatives'' requiring that teams ``seriously consider'' minority candidates for prominent job openings.

The club owner or executive continues to hire precisely whom he pleases, only now he must play the charade of appearing to give a fair shot to certain candidates in whom he has no actual interest.

League guidelines usually are satisfied by a club flying a ``candidate'' …
