May 6--YUCAIPA, Calif.--A planned community day school will not only save the Yucaipa-Calimesa Joint Unified School District nearly $200,000 next school year, it will also allow the district to finally serve students enrolled in long-term independent study programs, officials said.

On Tuesday, the district's Board of Trustees will hold a public hearing about the proposed Alternative Education Center.

District officials said the financial aspect is secondary to serving students who have been forced to enroll in independent study programs in other…
