May 3--The local venture capital scene is still in the doldrums. The latest evidence: A survey out this week from Ernst & Young and VentureOne showing exactly zero deals here in the first quarter.

The news comes as no big shock to John Kunhart, managing partner with American River Ventures, the area's largest VC firm.

"We're just not seeing that many companies looking for cash," he says. Kunhart says he expected the business downturn would "jostle loose" more execs from big local tech firms and encourage them to launch their own companies. "But it hasn't happened." …
