For the last year, Democratic aspirants have visited South Carolina with the zest usually reserved for Iowa and New Hampshire. On Saturday night, nine of them will be there for the first televised debate of the 2004 race.
The reason: South Carolina Democrats have set their presidential primary for the Tuesday after New Hampshire's, hoping to become the third major test of 2004 and the first with a substantial minority electorate.
