AKRON, Ohio _ Barbara and Fred Cammann's prairie is a work in progress, but the couple is very satisfied with the progress.
They have five acres of tall and medium grasses and flowering plants _ now in their third year _ in front of their home along the Huron River south of Huron, Ohio.
Friends laughed at the prairie and called it a weed patch.
"It didn't look good last year," Barbara admitted. "It was weedy."
Burning the prairie this spring, however, reduced the competing weeds and will help the prairie grasses and flowers to thrive.
"Our prairie is progressing and growing and changing," she said. "It's got a subtle beauty. The colors and texture are spectacular. It's always changing. It supports habitat for birds and butterflies and it takes almost no care. You plant the seeds and watch them grow."
