A: It took a beating in 1991, that's what happened to it.
In a report back in March, Dave Montgomery, Knight Ridder Washington bureau reporter, told us that Iraq's air force was thought to have fewer than 500 combat aircraft. Pre-Gulf War, it was the sixth-largest air force in the world, Montgomery said.
