CHICAGO _ Storm clouds gathered on the South Side on Thursday afternoon after a Chicago radio station reported that the White Sox were on the verge of firing manager Jerry Manuel.
The crux of the report was apparently based on an afternoon meeting of limited partners that took place in a conference room at U.S. Cellular Field.
But Sox officials said the meeting, which had been planned for six weeks, focused on business strategies and that Manuel's name never came up.
With the Sox pulling out a 7-5 victory Thursday over Oakland, the speculation about Manuel's job security might die down. For at least a day.
How did Sox general manager Ken Williams react to the report?
"After I got done laughing," he said, "I felt no need to talk to (Manuel) about it because we've already talked about all the issues concerning the ballclub. So he doesn't have to listen to any reports or read any newspapers ... to know what's on my mind."
