SAN FRANCISCO _ The Cubs accomplished victories on several fronts during Dusty Baker's homecoming trip to Pacific Bell Park.
Not only did they capture the series Thursday with a 5-1 win in 10 innings over San Francisco and remain in first place in the NL Central, but they also managed to get into Barry Bonds' head.
A wayward pitch by Mark Prior nearly sparked a brawl when the Giants slugger stormed toward the mound. After being hit for the third time in three days, Bonds finally lost his cool before order was restored.
In the end, Alex Gonzalez sent the Cubs home happy with two clutch home runs_a game-tying shot in the sixth inning and a three-run blast in the 10th to put the Cubs on top for keeps. It wasn't exactly a "win one for Dusty" campaign, but the players realized how much Baker wanted to beat his former team.
"Everybody just knew coming in," Gonzalez said. "It's hard not to know when everything is going on beforehand for him. We were aware of our surroundings and it was awesome."
With the Giants leading 1-0 with one out in the third, the game took a surreal turn when Prior threw a 1-1 pitch that was headed for Bonds' backside. It wound up hitting him on the hand as Bonds attempted to get out of the way, prompting him to stalk menacingly toward Prior.
