NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. _ Envious of the tourism bounty reaped across the Niagara River in Canada, this faded honeymoon capital is wagering that a new Native American casino will revive its dying fortunes.
Niagara Falls, Ontario, is making the most of its location next to the majestic falls with a casino that lures gamblers across the border and has spurred a high-rise hotel boom.
At sunset, shadows from the construction cranes reach across the river to the American border town's vacant shopping mall and lifeless sidewalks.
"It's like the Flintstones meet the Jetsons," said Patterson Smith, a bartender at a downtown hotel in Niagara Falls, N.Y. "They are 20 years ahead of where we are today."
While Smith served just a few customers on a recent Saturday evening, traffic jammed the district around the 7-year-old Casino Niagara in Ontario. A short walk across the Rainbow Bridge from New York State, tourists on the Canadian side clogged such all-American attractions as the Hard Rock Cafe, Rainforest Cafe, Planet Hollywood and Starbucks.
Now, Native American and New York officials say the new Seneca Niagara Casino can work similar wonders for the American side.
