The largest ground offensive of the war began Tuesday.
Southwest of Baghdad, U.S. forces began efforts to control the Karbala Gap. A success there _ which would require a defeat of the elite Republican Guard _ would leave coalition troops just 30 miles from the capital. Because the gap is so crucial, Army commanders fear that the enemy is more likely than ever to use chemical weapons.
