WASHINGTON _ America's largest refined-oil pipeline company will pay a record $34 million civil fine for pollution, the Bush administration announced Tuesday, saying that multimillion-dollar penalties for other polluters are on the way.
Administration officials, trying to counter criticism that they have been too soft on polluters, trumpeted Tuesday's settlement with Colonial Pipeline Company of Atlanta as "Exhibit A" of their zeal to enforce environmental laws, said John Peter Suarez, chief of enforcement for the Environmental Protection Agency.
