PHILADELPHIA _ The last time I officially debated anyone, I was at St. Stephen School in my native New Orleans. Eighth-grade boys vs. eighth-grade girls. Although my memory of the particulars is a bit fuzzy, I do seem to recollect that my presentation was well-researched, compelling, impassioned and irrefutable. I also prefer to believe my two teammates rallied around me, like the 76ers look to Allen Iverson in the fourth quarter of a close game.
Then the three judges _ two nuns and the mother of another eighth-grade girl _ rendered their verdict. Our female opponents won in what might be described as a home-gender decision. I suspect that experience helped prepare me to cover boxing, where the apparent winner often is the loser, and what you see (and hear) isn't always what you get.
