KORNGOLD "Die tote Stadt" Denoke, Kerl, Latham-Koenig, Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra, Chorus of Opera National du Rhin (Arthaus) Grade: C+
Not even Puccini or Richard Strauss penned a more sumptuously gorgeous opera than Erich Wolfgang Korngold's "Die tote Stadt." Dating from 1920, when Korngold was all of 23, it's a heavily perfumed flowering of late romanticism. What probably keeps it on the fringes of the active repertory is that so much of the music is assigned to the two main characters, and the roles of Paul (tenor) and Marietta (soprano) are enormously demanding.
