With so few job openings, the traditional marketplace for jobs _ the help-wanted ad _ has fallen on hard times.
Help-wanted advertising has plummeted nationally to its lowest level in four decades _ and hasn't budged in the past six months. The Help Wanted Index, compiled monthly by the Conference Board research group, hit 40 in January, about the same level it has been since October.
To put that in perspective, the index has dropped by more than half since its peak of just over 90, during 2000. It is also at its lowest point since 1964.
